Show that you care…
In last year’s February article, we talked about showing love and kindness to yourself through self-care and positive affirmations. This year, we want to remind you how crucial it is to show others that you care. We are living in an epidemic of loneliness; many people in our community feel isolated and alone. Sometimes just a hug or a wave or even a phone call can lighten the load for someone in need. You can be that little message out in the world to let them know they are not alone. One small act of kindness can make a huge impact.
When you pass someone on the street, give a compliment. When you like something about someone’s personality, tell them. Smile at a stranger. When we smile, it makes us feel good, acknowledges the other person’s presence, and sends a silent but impactful message.
When in a conversation, maintain eye contact and practice active listening. Make time for friends who build you up and make you feel valued and respected. Make people feel valued and respected! Initiate contact with those you want to spend time with.
Give grace. Forgive. Respect others’ boundaries. Be present. Show empathy and compassion and be patient. Encourage and show appreciation for their role in your life. Recognize the qualities that made you friends in the first place. Be authentic. Be supportive when they face difficulties, without judgment or assumptions.
Empower yourself with the knowledge of how to help someone who may be struggling or in a mental health crisis. We host monthly Mental Health First Aid classes to teach you how to respond and how to recognize a mental health concern. We believe that with each person we train, we are furthering our mission of creating a kind and caring community.
You can find a listing of our training sessions at fauquier-mha.org/events. We look forward to seeing you in one of our classes!
